What is it?

Typically, in construction, plant refers to heavy work machinery and equipment such as; telehandlers, cranes and excavators.

The serious bit

In 2019/2020 the HSE reported that as well as a significant number of serious accidents and working days lost, 18 fatalities were caused by a worker being struck by a moving object and a further 20 as a result of a worker coming into contact with moving machinery.

The legal bit

Organisations whose employees use work equipment, whether owned by them or not, have responsibilities under The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 to ensure that all machinery and work equipment is:

• Suitable for the intended use
• Safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and inspected to ensure it is correctly installed and does not subsequently deteriorate
• Used only by people who have received adequate information, instruction and training
• Accompanied by suitable health and safety measures, such as protective devices and controls
• Used in accordance with specific requirements.
