What is it?
Becoming common towards the end of the 19th century, asbestos is a group of 6 naturally occurring fibrous minerals composed of thin, needle-like fibres that can be found in many common materials such as: lagging, roofing felts, cement products and textured coatings.
Although now banned in the UK, in the past it was used for its strengthening and fireproofing properties and is still found in many residential or industrial buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000.
The serious bit
When materials that contain asbestos are disturbed or damaged, fibres are released into the air. Inhalation of these fibres can result in life threatening diseases that have slow developing symptoms. In many cases, it is too late for any treatment once a diagnosis of such a disease has been made
Asbestos is still the cause of over 5000 deaths per year in the UK.
The legal bit
Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires employers to provide all employees, and supervisors, who are or are liable to be exposed to asbestos to be given adequate information, instruction and training.
Workers and supervisors need to be able to:
- recognise Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACMs) and,
- know how to protect themselves and others.
The courses
The necessary instruction and training requirements should be determined by the roles undertaken by employees.
A Training Needs Analysis (TNA) will identify the level of training your employees require. At Training First we have developed a simple over the phone TNA to help you determine quickly your training requirements. Get in touch today to talk to one of our advisers about this.
